Of all the various questions people ask me, the one answer I give more than any others in keeping healthy betta's is to maintain a clean tank and change the water regularly. I can't stress how important this is to eliminating any problems before they happen. The number one cause of all betta fish diseases can be traced back to improper aquarium maintenance. Not cleaning your tank on a regular basis creates a breeding ground for bacteria and leads to several betta fish diseases.

Prevention is much easier in keeping your betta's healthy than trying to cure a sick betta once he has contracted a disease so keep your tanks clean.

Maintaining The Proper Water Temperature

Water temperature can not only greatly effect your betta's health but also his behavior and activity levels. You don't want the water too cold and you don't want it too hot. Ideally you want to maintain a constant water temperature that will allow your betta fish to thrive. The perfect water temperature for your tank should be about 28 degrees Celsius (82 Fahrenheit).

Keeping The Tank And Water Clean

This is perhaps the major cause of betta fish diseases and is the easiest to fix, yet many people neglect this important betta fish care tip. To keep your fish at optimum health they need clean water a good rule of thumb is to try and change at least one quarter of water twice a week. Doing this will ensure that your tanks environment will remain clean and help to avoid any disease causing bacteria from infecting your aquarium. Using water that has been left out for a day or so is recommended.

Keep A Lid On Your Tank

Betta fish love to jump and if you don't keep a proper lid on your tank you may wake up one day to find your friend flapping on the floor so keep a good fitting cover on your tanks at all times. You want to adjust your water level accordingly leaving a space of about 6 to 8 cm below the top of your tank is ideal as it will only allow your betta to breathe from the surface but to allow them some jumping room. This will stop your fish from ending up on the floor and allow them to take oxygen directly from the waters surface.

Proper Tank Cleaning

When cleaning your tank never use any store bought cleaners such as soap or detergents when cleaning your fish tank.as they contain harmful chemical that can get into the water supply instead Use fresh water and a  plastic brush to scrub the tank and any decorations you may have. Old food and other debris should be removed from the bottom of the tank This will make sure that your tank is always clean and fresh. it is extremely important to setup a betta fish tank the right way to avoid future problems

Proper Betta fish Feeding

Taking care of a betta fish goes beyond just basic tank maintenance, their diet is also an extremely important factor to keep in mind with any serious betta fish care regiment.Betta's are carnivores and love to eat live food like brine shrimp. But varying their diet by giving them a variety of food such as finely chopped vegetables or mosquitos will help maintain good health and lengthen their lives.

Try mixing in some thin, fine chopped vegetables into their diet on occasion as a special treat and your betta will love you for it.
