-Make sure you clean your aquarium at a minimum of every two weeks.
-Give them a well Balanced diet. Many people use pellets but betta fish love a variety of -foods from finely chopped vegetables to brine ship. A healthy diet is important for good betta health and keeping them happy for years to come.

Try and group your female betta fish using odd numbers as while females are safe to keep in the same tank together, they do form a  hierarchy with one becoming the dominant fish.  Having groups consisting of 3-5 fish is the ideal amount. If you keep only two one may become severely bullied and that can lead to injury and other illness.

Make sure you have a suitable size tank to house your fish. ideally you will want a three gallon tank for each fish that your planning to hold. Correctly setting up a betta fish tank is very important so make sure to do it right the first time.

If you have 5 fish than you would want a tank of at least 15 gallons 20 would be better as betta's love to hide and need plenty of room to swim.

Having a suitable aquarium size is the first step to creating a suitable habitat for your fish.

It is highly recommended that you not use plastic plants or other decorations in your tank as betta fish have very delicate fins and scales and can be easily damaged. A good live fern plant like java ferns are a great choice as they are very hardy and thrive in betta fish tanks.  They provide excellent shelter for your betta and help keep the water conditions of your tank clean, That alone is one of the most important factors in keeping healthy betta fish as if your tank is dirty it can lead to various betta fish diseases that can lead to disaster. Other suggested decorations for your tank that will provide good hiding spots for your fish are silk plants, and various cave type decoration all of which can be easily purchased at your local pet store.

Another thing to remember is that betta fish are delicate creatures, when buying your new friend you can tell the status of your betta by the stripes they display. A female betta will display vertical stripes and a more mature betta will display what is referred to as an egg type spot between the anal and ventral fins. In contrast a male betta will rarely show an egg spot.
