Before even considering betta fish breeding one of the most important things to remember is that older females may not produce eggs or be to weak for the male. The good news is that in captivity the betta splenden is one of the easiest fish to breed assuming you have the correct water conditions, and tank set up.

Even if your a complete novice just by following some basic rules you should be able to easily breed healthy, gorgeous betta fish. Perhaps the most difficult challenges you will find is in trying to grow your fry. The fry will typically stay in their bubble nest for approximately 36 hours as their gills develop,

You will notice about 2 days later the fry emerging from the bubble nest. The father will begin scooping up the young that are sinking to the bottom and bringing them to the surface. When you first notice that the babies are swimming on their own (not just hanging) but freely moving horizontally you must remove the father otherwise he may begin eating the fry.

Be very careful to not net the fry as you do this as they can be very difficult to see. The best approach is to lure the male away from the nest before trying to net him. Once he has been successfully removed be sure he has clean water.

Water Conditions

The optimum temperature for breeding betta fish is about 28 degrees Celsius (82F), however many breeders have achieved great results with temperatures in the 84F degree range It is highly recommended that you also have the cover plate in place to create a humid air space above the surface of the water.

It is not unusual to notice the occasional dead fry so don't be alarmed if you find a few of them dead. Many hatch to weak or malformed to survive the initial 10 days. If on the other hand you notice a large amount of dead frys or see them dying daily, than you have a problem that must be corrected immediately. Either there is a problem your water conditions or a disease and harmful bacteria may be present.

Proper Tank Environment

The optimum tank temperature should be between 75-85 Degress farenhegh, with special care taken to monitor ammonia levels on new tanks that commonly build up kiling or making yout betta sick. Be sure to wash your tank properly and change the water on a regular basis to maximixe the life span of your betta.

The average lifespan of a typical domestic betta fish on average is between two and four years with those kept in a well maintained aquarium reaching more than a six year life span.

How to Have Happy Healthy Betta Fish

One of the most important things about betta health you should always keep in mind is to always keep a clean and properly maintained tank. The average life span of a betta fish is about two to three years, however with the correct environment a betta can live as long as 6 years. Here are some of the most common health problems that can affect your betta fish.

Betta Fish Stress

Stress is a common problem with many different types of pet fish, and the betta is no different. The symptoms are usually common and can be diagnosed rather easily. Some of the most frequent symptoms are open sores (usually white or red in color) spotted skin and noticeable difficulty in breathing. They may also remain still or lie on the bottom of the tank for extended periods of time.

Usually water quality or other enviornmental conditions such as ammonia poisoning or recent changes to their habitat such as a new tank element can be the cause of their stress. Transfering them to a temporary container when you clean their tanks may also be a contributing factor.

Improper Tank Size

Usually betta fish come in a small plastic cup when you purchase them from the pet store. In the wild they live in rice paddies and ponds that are typically shallow still water, with lots of swimming room. A one gallon tank is the minimum size you should have for them to live in. Any smaller can cause stress or create poor water quaility which can lead to diseases and other health problems.

No Access To the Surface Air

One of the most unique things about a betta fish is an organ called the “labyrinth“ which allows them to breath air from the atmosphere. Due to this organ betta fish rely on and need access to surface air to remain healthy, because of this it is important to have a large surface area with good ventilation to ensure your betta`s optimum health.

Incorrect Water Temperature

Betta fish should be provided a clean environment with water temperature between 70 and 80 degress, which mimics the conditions found in the wild. An electric tank heater that maintains a constant temerature is highly recommended as water that is too cold can result in poor health or loss of color.

Here are the symptoms of some common betta fish diseases you can use to try and identify what it is, that is making your betta sick. In most cases the greatest cause of a sick betta is poor water quality and I can't emphasize enough the importance of properly maintaining your tank.

With that in mind here is the list of the most frequent betta diseases:

Betta Fish Dropsy

There are two signs you should look for in diagnosing betta dropsy: the first is a bloated or unusally large belly. The second symptom to look for are raised scales, when you look at your betta from a top angle the scales will resemble an open pine cone type shape. see image below.

Betta fish dropsy is usually caused by bacteria that lodges in the body of the fish and affects the kidneys causing water retention in the body. Unless immediate treatment is administered, this condition can be fatal for your betta.

Mouth Fungus

This will resemble a white fungus similar in appearance to cotton that appears around the mouth and lips of your betta. The affected fish may become sluggish and stop eating all together.

Fin Rot

This one of the most common diseases that affect bettas and is rather easy to identify. The fins of your betta will have holes (pin type) in them and have a tattered worn appearance. The cause is usually poor care and seen in new betta's typically because the pet store didn't maintain proper tank conditions.

Fortunately this is an easy disease to treat, by making sure the water in your tank is in perfect condition and using aquarium salt. Be sure that ammonia, nitrite, and pH levels are at zero.

Septicimia

This is one of the worst betta fish diseases you can get and should be treated very seriously. It is an infection in the bloodstream that occurs through an open wound either through fighting with other fish or when you betta injures himself. It can also occur through bacteria in your bettas it is important to keep your water conditions especially clean as to not further aggrevate the condition.

It usually manifests as redness under the scales and can be localized in one area or appear throughout the body. It may be hard to identify in red or dark colored fish Assuming you have corrected any water conditions that may hamper your betta's recovery, the open wounds will usually heal quickly. Other symptoms are loss of appetite, clamped fins, sluggishness and color loss.

While no one likes to be faced with a sick betta the good news is that in most cases the majority of betta fish illnesses can be easily treated if acted upon quickly.
